Leading up to The Battle of Midway.
The Battle at Midway was the turning point in WWII. The United States had been devastated when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Just six months after this surprise and crushing attack, the United States Navy Pacific Fleet attacked the much larger Imperial Japanese fleet and won the Battle of Midway.
The battle that balanced the powers.
Before this victory, Japan had a much superior navy over the United States and had the ability to choose when and where they would attack. But after Midway, the two enemy fleets were now equals in strength, and the United States soon would take the offensive and became stronger and more dominating.
Why was the Midway Atoll important?
Midway is called an Atoll, a small island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. It was tiny, but strategically important because it was the halfway point between Asia and North America. Midway was home to a U.S. Naval air station, about 1,000 miles from Hawaii.
